Laura Marling
The sweet and tender voice of Laura Marling is sure to be heard by a few more folk over the coming weeks after taking Best British Female at the Brit Awards last night. Are the 'Brits' entering a more respectable era? The voting panel was shaken up to include music artists for the first time and (most) the award winners weren't those that are plastered to the picture pages of our papers. But what's popular can't be 'cool' can it? Maybe the likes of David Beckham being an exception to the rule.
Anyways back to Laura Marling, a beautiful singer-songwriter with raw live qualities that make her songs seem so intimate. Check out the short film:

Grammy Award winners - The Black Keys
Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have been playing cool bluesy rock stuff under the name of The Black Keys for about ten years now. Their latest album 'Brothers' won two awards at the Grammy's last night as did the single 'Tighten Up'. Good times.
Brothers - Best Alternative Music Album
Brothers - Best Recording Package (Michael Carney)
Tighten Up - Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals
The Black Keys have got into the habit of releasing tongue in cheek music videos and their latest offering is in the form of a cringe worthy action movie trailer. Spot Shaun White.

Moments after performing 'Months of May', Arcade Fire's 'The Suburbs' was named Album of the Year. Betting off heavy weight competition to win the award, the Canadian group finished their acceptance speech by playing 'Ready to Start' check it out below:
Grammy Awards - Mick Jagger performance
The ever youthful Mick Jagger paid tribute to the late 'king of rock n soul' Solomon Burke. Awesome.

Philippe Petit - Man On Wire
Beautiful film of Philippe Petit in a quest to fulfill his dream. Trailer is slightly over the top but this is definitely worth seeing. It's been out for about two years, a superb British documentary film.

A Team With No History
The Super Rugby 2011 (previously Super 14) season is set to start in NZ/SAF/AUS with a new revamped three-Conference format. Melbourne Rebels are new to Super Rugby, by focusing on the struggle that may lie ahead WhyBin/TBWA/TEQUILA have developed a campaign to build support for the team from the ground up. Everyone loves an underdog, especially one's called: Mortlock, Cipriani, Lipman and Vuna.

Submarine
Richard Ayoade's 'Submarine', has been going down well at film festivals, the much anticipated film inspired by Joe Dunthorne's novel is in cinemas on March 18th. If you can't wait that long it is showing at the Glasgow Film Festival 18th/19th February. Sure to be one of the best British debuts of the year.
Super Bowl XLV
Last night the two most successful franchises in the history of American Football battled it out at Dallas Cowboys $1.2 billion Stadium. The Green Bay Packers got their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy once again after holding their nerve to survive a fightback from the Pittsburgh Steelers to take victory 31-25. With over 100 million television viewers and 103,219 fans inside the Cowboys Stadium, Super Bowl XLV is clearly one of the biggest sporting events of all time. The Super Bowl is surrounded with a lot of hype and this year was no different. The biggest advertising event of the year saw companies paying up to $3 million for a 30 second spot (below are three of my favourite).

Yann Martel - What is Stephen Harper Reading?
This Monday Yann Martel (author of the superb novel 'Life of Pi') sent his one hundredth and final book to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. On the 16th April 2007 Yann began sending personally selected books with an accompanying letter to his Prime Minister. Yann was inspired to start this 'little book club' after Mr Harper attended the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Council of Arts in 2007 and barely acknowledged the writers that attended. Yann has sent a book & letter every other Monday for the past four years, but after receiving only five three-line letters from Mr Harper's staff in response he feels that "100 is enough". Yann kept a report on all he sent to the Prime Minister to see it click here.
